Women's clinic sponsors baby bottle campaign

On Jan. 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court voted 7-to-2 in favor of Roe, in the landmark case Roe v. Wade legalizing abortion.

Various churches and organizations use the anniversary as a time of reflection and to do fund-raising for their ministries and organizations.

Shoals Sav-A-Life/Shoals Women’s Clinic is encouraging churches in the area to present an appropriate message in their Sunday service in observance of Sanctity of Human Life Sunday.

“We just work with the local churches and encourage them to share a message that speaks to the subject of the sanctity of human life,” said Beth Grisham, executive director of Shoals Women’s Clinic at 2201 Cloyd Blvd., Florence.

All of the services of Shoals Women’s Clinic are free, Grisham said. To help raise money for the clinic, they give baby bottles to church congregations as a vessel to collect donations.

“Our big push is getting that message out there, where they are talking about that from the pulpit,” Grisham said.

She said they have planned to distribute 2,500 baby bottles this year.

“Our center is a lot about educating women to make wise choices, and I think when you have all the facts in hand you can make a better, educated decision,” said Grisham, who added that the center promotes abstinence as a lifestyle.

Abstinence education, pregnancy tests, testing for sexually transmitted diseases, helping women with the emotional weight of having had an abortion and some ultrasound work are some of the services the clinic offers, Grisham said.

On Tuesday, the day of the anniversary, the National Pro-Life Religious Council will host an hour of prayer webcast on its website, nprcouncil.org, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. They also are encouraging participants to spend the day fasting.
