FLORENCE — Daniel Wood rushed for 382 yards and scored six touchdowns, while Dustin Covington added 208 yards and two scores of his own, as Shoals Christian pounded out a 56-32 win over Phillips to clinch second place in Class 1A, Region 8.

“I’m proud of our kids,” Coach Patrick Odom said. “We lost such a heart-breaker last week and you never know how the team will respond. I thought we dominated with our rushing game tonight. That was a focal point for us all week.”

Shoals Christian struck first when Wood broke a 77-yard touchdown run.

Wood added a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter on runs of 9 and 8 yards, and Covington scored on a 51-yard run to put the Flame ahead 28-0 with 1:33 remaining in the half.

Phillips’ quarterback Rodney Camp found Tyler Crumpton on a 24-yard touchdown strike just before the half, trimming the lead to 28-6.

The Bears cut further into the lead early in the third when Camp scored on an 8-yard run. A failed 2-point conversion made it 28-12.

Wood answered for Shoals Christian on 8-yard run less than two minutes later to extend the Flame’s lead to 23.

Crumpton hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass from Camp with 5:49 remaining in the third quarter to make it 35-18, but that was as closes as Phillips could get as Daniel Wood scored twice more on runs of 19 and 12 yards, and Covington broke free for an 84-yard dash that extended Shoals Christian’s lead to 55-18 after three quarters.

Camp scored on runs of 5 and 2 yards in the fourth, and ran up the middle for a 2-point conversion.

“It was a fun night.” Wood said. “My offensive line blocked well. I couldn’t have done it without them. We wrapped up a home playoff game tonight and that was huge.”

Camp finished with 382 yards passing and two touchdowns to lead Phillips, and added 138 yards on the ground and three scores. Crumpton hauled in nine passes for 85 yards including his two touchdown receptions.

Wood and Covington each added 12 tackles for the Flame.

“I told our team it is real important to have a first-round playoff game here.” Odom said. “I feel like we have put ourselves in good position.”
