  • “I’ve noticed a lot of police cars and state troopers that do not run their headlights when it’s raining, or even use signals. I thought the law is for everyone, not just a select few.”

  • “I just read the ‘Historic downtown’ article in Friday’s paper and I think that is such a beautiful idea. We’re sitting right on top of the hill from Tennessee River and I would have given anything in the last 30 years when I could have walked had there been a way to get from downtown down Court Street to the Tennessee River. And bicycle racks along the way, places to sit down along the way. That is such a great idea about having places to eat outside of restaurants. ... It could be a place of tourist attraction and it could be beautiful.”

  • “Me and my wife drive through St. Florian every day and we’ve got a solution to that traffic problem there. All you’ve got to do is just put a three-way stop sign there and that will solve the problem.”

  • “This is the person who called recently and said it was irrational the way people were running out and buying guns. Someone responded and said only burglars were going to get hurt. I bet my life none of those 20 Newtown children were burglars. Also people with this mind-set have now started saying that cars kill, baseball bats kill, are we going to ban those? There’s a subtle difference here. Cars were not made to kill. Bats were not made to kill, but guns were made to do exactly that. Just ask any of the parents of those 20 children.”

  • “Will someone please tell Jeff Sessions that your old Colt six-shot revolver is a single-action revolver or pistol — whatever you want to call it - not a semi-automatic. A semi-automatic has a clip.”

  • “If you would like to get an understanding of the knowledge some of the players discussing gun control legislation, their lack of knowledge is more apparent than their understanding. Sen. Sessions was quoted in Friday’s paper, ‘The old Colt revolver is a semi-automatic weapon.’ Think about that.”

  • “Why don’t these local musicians give a benefit concert once a month and donate it to the Alabama Music Hall of Fame? That way they could keep it open.”

  • “I’m watching the inauguration of President Barack Obama and I’m hearing him being compared to Martin Luther King Jr. King was against the Vietnam War. There is no way that President Obama is like Martin Luther King. Obama is a war criminal.”

  • “You know you’re pathetic when your columnists start quoting Al Sharpston.”

  • “I don’t know why everybody is upset about the guns and stuff. I know people do stupid stuff. They have enough sense to not even carry a gun. The bad part about it is there’s more or less loaded guns laying in all these stores. They sell alcohol. That’s easy to walk in and grab the can. There’s probably a lot more people killed by alcoholics and drunk drivers than anybody shot. It’s easy to walk in and grab a bottle and pop the top — same thing as pulling the trigger on somebody — and getting on the road and driving and killing a bunch of people.”

  • “As a union representative and attending many Democratic functions, both locally and across the nation, and in Washington, D.C., if the Republicans in Alabama will just stay the course like they’re doing we may have a reversal ... of the political fortune here in Alabama. They’re wanting to stay in the ‘50s and ‘60s, and my friends, that’s not where the future lies.”

  • “I read with interest your article in Sunday’s paper about the revolving restaurant at the Renaissance Tower. I took my wife there for an anniversary dinner last year. We dressed nice, had two modest meals and the bill came to $170, and the message was working class keep out. If you’re not one of the elite, then this is not for you even though your tax money helped build it.”

  • “Since they accidentally caught the guys that were stealing all the copper from all these towers in both counties, we need to see the arrest of people that’s buying it from them.”

  • “You know, instead of naming animals after the president, they ought to name the president after an animal. The best one I can really think of right now is a weasel.”

  • “I wondered why we people in Muscle Shoals had to pay the same price for sewer as we do water. And, now I know. The mayor and the council need the money for all that high flying and steak dinners and fine hotels. So, good traveling.”

  • “If the United States Congress was any count, they’d do something about these blankety-blank-blank-blank advertisements on television. Stop them. Some of them. All of them.”

  • “Hey, if I could decide the fate of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, I would present it to Dr. David Bronner of the Alabama ... retirement system. Does anyone remember the Alabama Renaissance Tower? See what he did about this eyesore and the surrounding area.”

  • “Now I know why one of Obama’s little henchmen says ‘let’s not let a good crisis go to waste.’ What they’re doing is they’re using every crisis — and I know some bad things have happened — but they’re using every crisis to try to trample on the Constitution. God help us if we lose our Constitution. Now, we’re very quickly losing it because Obama wants to get rid of it. He wants to be the man.”

  • “I’m calling about the budgets for the four cities. Florence is really kicking downtown, as well as all the new restaurants, malls and shopping centers. Sheffield has a lot of new businesses, restaurants and look at the beautiful sidewalks in the city. Tuscumbia is full of really nice stores. The atmosphere and merchandise and shops is good, food is good. My favorite. What in the world is going on with Muscle Shoals? ... I don’t see a mall, nothing but cash title places and junk stores. The atmosphere is terrible when you go into any of the stores ... What is the mayor doing?”
