“You know, I for one treat all my fellow human beings decently and I try not to use offensive language. I think the first lady is probably one of the most elegant first ladies we’ve had and the good work she’s done. So, after reading this coach/teacher’s comments, it troubles me that he’s in a position to say that in front of children. You know, I didn’t agree with anything George Bush did — two wars for the rich, yadda, yadda — but I never for some reason took off after a woman, the first lady.”
“Rush Limbaugh became rich and famous with his rhetoric on the airways. Mr. Grisham misspoke in the classroom. Where you sound off apparently makes a difference. When will the Republicans get the message? Button your lips.”
“You ever notice when you go somewhere for a family gathering now that everybody kind of seems to just be sitting around in a corner with their communication devices by themselves? It’s just not like it used to be.”
“Nothing will be done, I guarantee you, to Mr. Grisham because he is a football coach at Lauderdale County High School. Sports is more important to some people than the academics and the sensitivity of our kids.”
“I sure hope when they build the new hospital, if they get to build it over there in Florence, that they’ll do something about the smokers. They don’t need to be smoking on the grounds anywhere. They need to give a ticket to the ones smoking now standing in front of the door of ECM.”
“Every article I read about this Midland City hostage situation describes the offender as a Vietnam-era veteran. Was he ever actually in Vietnam? Did he ever see combat? And, if he didn’t, what’s the point of mentioning it? This is merely another attempt to stigmatize Vietnam veterans.”
“The issue about the coach at Lauderdale County High School should not be about what he said, but about the little ... that secretly tape-recorded him. What happened to freedom of speech? Hang in there, Coach Grisham. By the way, I have never met this man.”
“Some of the Sheffield police do drive too fast when they’re not on call.”
“I would like to say I don’t think it should make any difference when it comes down to Mr. Grisham when they expelled the student from UNA. ... He’s a teacher, he should know better.”
“To all these people calling in about Bob Grisham and his statements in the classroom, you know, I guess everyone would want to fire God because God is the one who said homosexuality is an abomination. All Bob was doing was telling the people what God had already said. So, I don’t think Bob was judging anybody. He was just stating a fact that God said ... So I guess the people want to fire God now.”
“Morrow and the Hall of Fame, do you not realize the state’s nearly broke and you’re wanting to throw more money at something that the state should have never been burdened with in the first place? I don’t want to hear it’s a tourist destination, because if it was, you wouldn’t have these problems. If the music industry cared anything about that, they would have concerts and the ones now would hold concerts to raise money for the ones that can’t afford them.”
“To the caller who said would parents rather have their children smoking recreational pot or drinking vodka, chances are if teenagers are smoking pot, they’re probably drinking all kinds of alcohol, too.”
“I have one thing to say about the new cancer treatment centers in the Shoals. If you have ever sat at one of them that’s here now for hours with a dying cancer patient waiting for treatment while they’re in agony, then you know how desperately we need new treatment facilities.”
